|Dr. Al Gerbie|
|Al Gerbie passed away October 15, 2007|
Dr. Al Gerbie died October 15, 2007, the day after his wife, Barbara, passed away. Service was held at Lakeside Congregation Synagogue on Lake Cook Road.
Al's death notice appears in the Chicago Tribune at this link: http://www.legacy.com/chicagotribune/Obituaries.asp?Page=Lifestory&PersonId=96233431
Al was a tireless member of the Skokie Valley Skating Club, serving in many leadership posts. Last year, he was co-chair of the membership committee after serving in previous years as vice president.
|During his final months in hospice, Al received cards and letters from many friends, prompting his "thank-you" note that follows:
Just a short sincere note to thank all the wonderful skaters for your cards, good wishes and caring. They say "Skaters don't care". I'll tell you they DO care.
In the couple months of my illness I've received over 80 cards from individual skaters and many signature cards with over 100 separate signatures plus get well notes in "group" cards.
Special thanks to WLB, SVSC, Windy City, KC, SD, and Chicago. Skaters do care and are a compassionate group that I'm fortunate to have as friends.
Albert B. Gerbie, M.D.
Joe Dietrich adds:
The passing of our friend, Dr. Al Gerbie, has left us all in a state of shock. To many, he was their doctor who was always there to help.
Over a period of some thirty years, I skated with him and we became close friends. As prominent a doctor as he was, he never showed it. I was so honored to be his friend. Skating was a passion for Al. He enjoyed taking lessons from Julie, Penny, and Yasmin. He was the one who encouraged me to keep skating.
He will be greatly missed by all.
